i think i'm stil suffering from post-anugerah depression. there's really nuthing to look forward to on tuesday nights. ;-( hence, i settled down on the living room couch shortly after iftar (i've never been a terawih person anyway) to see what tcs5 has to offer with much apprehension...
730pm - The Food Chain. This variety cum cooking programme gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the production & manufacturing side of everyday food items such as tofu & soy sauce. sounds boring rite? however, the host, local theatre & tv thespian tan kheng hua, is anything but boring. she is a joy to watch as she single-handedly saves the show from mediocrity wif her zany humor & blithe personality. by show's end, i was practically grinning frm ear-to-ear...
8pm - Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd. the sixth season of one of singapore's most successful sitcoms is really becoming... LAME. even tan kheng hua's comedic talents arent enuff to rescue this tired sitcom from sinking faster than kate winslet on the titanic. kheng hua's outlandish, haute couture english sounds too affected; pierre png's hapless chu beng seems to be trying too hard most of time; PCKs two idiotic underlings are too cliched & gruesomely unfunny; Thus, its up to irene ang & gurmit singh to save the day but its painfully obvious that they're sumhow trying desperately to make the best of a script that reeks of corny one-liners, lame slapstick and a multitude of cringeworthy moments. How sad. Perhaps PCk has simply run out of steam... Still, i much prefer gurmit singh here than in Brothers 4. the latter is simply a channel U sitcom that got translated by mistake.
830pm - Living with Lydia. I think lydia sum is irresistibly cute (but most fat people are anyway ;p ). must be her cina-hongkong-accented english.. neither contrived nor artificial, (unlike gurmit singh's singlish) her hongkie slang is hilarious although her lines arent even funny sumtimes. Even the supporting cast, while not exactly top-notch, delivers some rib-tickling moments which could give the PCK crew a run fer their money. koh chieung mun as rhonda (khenghua's haughty-english-speaking counterpart) is a gem to watch as her character is formulaic yet inspired; suhaimi yusoff's sulaiman isnt so overdone & thus watchable; and samuel chong as billy B ong lends a certain sensible balance to the motley cast. the only thing that's really aggravating is the Dodo fishball ad which is played at every commercial interval. since this cant be helped however (since dodo is a significant sponsor), i guess living wif lydia is pretty tolerable overall. Wif better scripting, i think this sitcom might stand a chance of evolving into sumthing on par wif or even better than PCK in its glory days... (i hope! LOL )
