of running noses and running juries...

The area surrounding my pc is quite a disgusting sight to behold; it is littered with used tissues.. mucus-soaked tissues to be exact (if the watery, dribbly stuff that continues to leak from my nose is called "mucus", that is... ). I think I've used up almost half of the box of tissues in my room... (i think the guy who invented tissues is a genius!) So yeah, i've got the flu but that doesnt mean that i'm sick or anything cos' i'm not running a temperature at all (just checked). Furthermore, I wouldnt call having a running/blocked nose a sickness anyway; i think it's more like a test of endurance. Or an aggravating affliction of the soul. Muahahaha.. Well anyhow, I slept for ten hours last night! Either i'm just the worst sloth that ever lived or it must have been the after-effect of downing two chlorpheniramine tablets (when one would have sufficed) after supper yesterday. Whatever the case, my flu has gotten slightly more tolerable as compared to last night so i guess i should be a little thankful. ;-)

Nonetheless, I'm not surprised if half of Singapore is down with the sniffles; we've been having such crazy weather over the last couple of weeks. In the afternoons, it could get so scorchingly hot and humid but by early evening, the sky would be overcast and we'd get a downpour before long. The PUB had even predicted that flashfloods may strike yet again some time early this week; seeing how i almost fried myself when i was out yesterday afternoon, i find that piece of forecast abit hard to believe. However, the flooding which occurred a week or so back, in some parts of the city, is testament to the fact that anything is possible, even in this concrete jungle of singapore. I hope the residents of Kampung Lorong Buangkok have been keeping their fingers crossed... ;p

From running noses, let's move on to running juries. I'm a fan (not a huge one, however) of John Grisham but I regarded the latest movie adapted from one of his novels with some misgivings initially because I've seen how even the best of books could get mangled during the transition of paper to celluloid. Fortunately, Runaway Jury proved to be quite the suspenseful, thrill-ride it promised to be. With heavyweight stars like Gene Hackman & Dustin Hoffman (both are previous oscar winners) lending their talents & reliable co-stars John CUsack & Rachel Weisz providing us with the eye-candy, I dont think the movie can go very wrong anyway. I'm sad to say that the adaptation wasnt very faithful to Grisham's original story (the case was supposed to be about the tobacco industry & not the gun industry) but the charismatic leads were able to pull off their roles wif such aplomb, i gotta give this movie 3.8/ 5 stars despite whatever the critics say. Even the supporting cast was top-notch; Marguerite Moreau (from Firestarter 2: Rekindled) and Jeremy Piven (an alum from Ellen sitcom) are amongst the bunch of familiar yet able actors that carry their tiny roles wif credibility. I must admit, the lawyers' jargon may get a tad irritating at times but the tight pace of the show will keep you at the edge of your seat. Seriously, Hackman & Hoffman are such magnetic actors, it's hard to imagine anyone stealing scenes from them but Cusack & Weisz proved that they were up to the challenge, their pretty faces notwithstanding. Altogether, Runaway Jury is a clever and engaging movie but it's not exactly light-entertainment so movie-goers who dont like to think so much, beware!!
