the search for a nation's idol has begun... well, sort of lah

Because tuition was postponed yesterday evening, I was able to catch singapore idol's first group of contestants battle it out on channel 5. WHile I was kinda excited about it at first (at the prospect of discovering our own version of Kelly, Clay, Ruben, Fantasia et al), my enthusiasm began to wear off as the minutes ticked by... Apart from the three who made it through to the finals, the rest were, in a word, disappointing. Arent these people supposed to be part of the final THIRTY who made it through rounds of vigorous auditions??? If this was so, then where's the talent??? By the time the show ended, I was so disgusted by the generally weak performances that I almost regurgitated the fishballs i ate for dinner.. ;p

Actually, I'm much more disgusted by the judges, who took every opportunity to demean and degrade the contestants (excluding their pet-favorites) in turn. Nary a kind word was said although it is THEY who have brought each of the latter this far in the competition. For instance, it was unanimously agreed that singing wasn't David De Cruz's strong point... if this was the case, then why let him be part of the final 30 anyway?? The judges have embarrassed him on national tv with no apologies... and they did it on purpose too. I was so peeved that I simply refused to watch the results show, preferring instead to cloister myself in my room...

Oh well; I never liked reality tv very much anyway.
