Sg Idol: reviewing the situation...
Friday, September 10, 2004

At long last, the final three finalists have been picked. Seriously though, I'm more than just a little disappointed by SgIdol's dismal showing... Thirty singers/performers had strutted their stuff and I'm still NOT impressed (except maybe, by a precious few..). I guess I'm just being overly fastidious but it doesnt help that Malaysian Idol, which is already in its thirteenth or twelfth week of conception, boasts some very outstanding talents that far surpasses anything SgIdol could dish out. But nevermind; let's get on with the program...

The 9 Finalists
David Yeo, Jeassea K. Thyidor, Olinda Cho
Although I think that David has got to be one of the most nauseatingly affected individuals to grace this wonderful island of ours, he possesses, honestly speaking, the best male voice in the top 9. Actually, he IS a beng despite all his (mild) protestations but I dont mind this at all; what I DO mind, however, is his whole i'm-in-love-with-clay-aiken persona. Ditch that, and I might consider liking him... Jeassea is a strong performer with equally strong vocals to match. I really need to see more of her before I can make any sound opinions with regards to her idol-worthiness... I'm in love with Olinda's husky and distinctive vocals and her amazingly fresh image is something I really appreciate.. But it's pretty obvious that she's hoping to win this competition and perhaps, her over-zealousness to make herself popular (by emphasizing her zany personality) might turn her into a major turn-off for me in the future.

Christopher Michael Lee, Candice Foo, Daphne Khoo
Christopher may look cute (according to some people who claim to be an expert on such matters) but I seriously cannot imagine him singing anything else except Your Song. Firstly, I think he has such an ordinary and unspectacular voice that he probably deserves to be kicked out in the first couple of weeks of the elimination rounds. Nevertheless, I have this nagging suspicion that love-struck tweens (the kind who are crazily in lurve with F4 etc etc) will keep him sticking around for quite awhile... I know I'm being very blunt here but Candice is perhaps the most unworthy contestant to make it to the top 9. Her performance was so soul-less and uninspired; I wonder which goons actually voted for her... On a more positive note, I feel that Daphne, despite her tender years, has alot of potential. She's not only got a cutesy, pop-ish smile to go along with her cutesy, pop-ish voice, she can carry a tune decently well too, proving that she aint no lip-synching Britney.

Leandra Veronica Rasiah, Taufik Batisah, Jerry Ong
I'm ecstatic that Leandra got thru; her throaty vocals is reminiscent of Camile Velasco's, minus the shaky stage-fright quality. hehehe.. Leandra may not be able to pull off any Mariah/Whitney/Christina gymnastics but she's certainly got enuff soul and spunk to spin gold from the corniest material (eg. Ben). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll get to the top three spots, at least... I've heard that Taufik can do a pretty mean Usher-voice thingy and his performance tonight (though it didnt wow me that much) convinced me that he deserves a shot at idol-stardom. Anyway, evry competition needs an RnB crooner and sg-idol finally has a credible one ;) ...*note; I have nothing to say about Jerry except this -- I hope he gets eliminated early.. ;p

Judges' Wildcard picks
1)Andy Joshua Lim 2)Benjamin Eio 3)Beverly Lim Morata 4)Maia Lee 5)Haizad Imram 6)Nelson Tan 7)Nana 8)Shirin Hushairi 9)Sylvester Sim

I probably missed out on one more person but I think ten is one wildcard too many anyway. The producers should just stick to eight cuz they're only gonna pick ONE; why call back so many people when you only just want ONE? Unless of course, the producers decide to do something totally unpredictable after the wildcard show, by letting more than one finalist get through (and I've got the strangest gut-feeling this is true.. spidey-sense tingling like mad! LOL).

Most deserving wildcards: Maia and Nana
Most undeserving wildcards: Nelson, Andy and Benjamin.

PS: In case you're wondering, I've purposely left out whatever our panel of lame judges have got to say.. I think they each deserve a shot in the head or sumthing equally vicious to make them wake up their bloordy idea (wadever the hell this means..). 'Nuff said~!! :p
