I was rather looking forward to watch this sequel to the 2002 movie which was based on the immensely popular Resident Evil gaming franchise. While faithful to the game in many aspects, I was slightly disappointed by director Anthony Witt's debut feature. Contrary to his namesake, there was very little wit involved in this film's making; against his better judgement, the director had interspersed several comedic elements throughout the show which I felt stood out jarringly and affected the movie's overall progression. For instance, there was this one part where one of the good guys was so distracted by a zombie whore (i'm not pulling your leg! serious!) that he inadvertently crashed the car he was driving... I'm not being prudish at all but I believe this kind of scene is much more effective in White Chicks or maybe in some other B-grade horror flick (Scary Movie comes to mind).
However, whatever grudges I have against the film is probably negated by the presence of the film's dynamic lead -- the wonderfully enigmatic Milla Jovovich. In my honest opinion, she makes a convincing action-heroine, and even more so than Angelina Jolie. Although spouting dramatic lines isnt her forte, Milla's penetrating gazes before she whacks her opponents senseless is worth evry cent spent on yr movie ticket! (ok, I'm exaggerating a little here.. LOL) ALso providing some eye-candy is Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine who uncannily bears a striking resemblance to Victoria Beckham but (thankfully) gifted with the athletic capabilities of Lara Croft. Go figure~ ;p
Sexy female protagonists aside, Resident Evil: Apocalypse delivers just sufficiently in terms of special effects and action sequences but the shaky plot twists and some very lame attempts to color the film with humor, mar what could have been a great film. Despite what some others might have to say, I think Dawn Of The Dead is a more effective zombie movie...
my ratings --- 3.2/5 stars!
