another fallen idol

In a rare moment of firsts, I've finally hit jackpot by predicting all three bottom contestants accurately (although I did cheat abit by putting in Anwar's name alongside Bo's!). Actually, it's quite funny to realise how most of my ominous presentiments are never far from the truth, whereas my positive intuition is always erroneous. I could probably list many happenstances that might illustrate this point effectively but it would make this entry much too long (and too morbid).

In a way, I am a tad crestfallen that Nadia was eliminated; she's one of the few idol finalists with a likeable personality, and she has never failed to amuse and amaze with her eccentric but personal song choices. Though it is only a matter of time before her vocal limitations would bring about her downfall, her sparkling sense of individualism will still be sorely missed. Indubitably, every single tear that was shed upon the idol stage was a symbol of genuine heartbreak and disappointment for our afro-ed diva. This is a competition -- SOMEONE has to lose. This week, it's Nadia's turn.

And isn't our lives a constant competition too? A race to finish first, ahead of your rivals and even your contemporaries? For every person leading the pack, there is another who is lagging behind... and some of those who are unable to keep the pace will eventually be left so far at the back that falling out from the competition is inevitable. It takes great guts to stay on. Takes great courage to live.

Last week, Bo Bice sang Corner of The Sky, a song which was declared something no one had ever heard before. This isn't 100% true because I have heard it prior to his performance, and perhaps am the only person on this whole island who even knew such a song existed. (FYI: music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, the same man responsible for the pyrotechnic-frenzy When You Believe, sung by duelling divas Whitney & Mariah) I don't know why it isn't particularly difficult for me to identify with the cheesy, yet wistful, lyrics --
Every man has his daydreams, every man has his goal,
People like the way dreams have of sticking to the soul.
Thuderclouds have their lightning,
Nightingales have their song --
Don't you see I want my life to be something more than long?

So many men seem destined to settle for something small,
But I won't rest until I know I have it all.
So don't ask where I'm going,
Just listen when I'm gone --
Faraway you'll hear me singing softly to the dawn;

Rivers belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly;
I'd like to be where my spirit can run free
Gotta find my corner of the sky..!
