Spongebob Squarepants The Movie
Monday, April 04, 2005

I know I should have caught this film eons ago but due to some mysterious and unknown force (yah, rite~), I only managed to do so during this past weekend. Nevertheless, like the animated series itself, Spongebob Squarepants The Movie is a free-wheeling fun-ride from start to finish, albeit being a tad peculiar at times.

The plot is simple enough to be understood by an eight-year-old, but some of the jokes are so outrageously wicked and campy that they completely took me by surprise and left me in stitches for a good five minutes or so. The live-action pirate scene which serves as the film's preface and David Hasselhoff's cameo appearance are definitely my ultimate faves. Honestly, my friends and I laughed harder and louder than any of the kids in the cinema where we were watching this film!

In the wake of complex CGI epics with moralistic undertones (eg. The Incredibles, Shark Tale, Robots), Spongebob Squarepants The Movie has an innocent simplicity that may seem like an insult to your mature intelligence. However, don't be put off by its apparent silliness or its pervasive use of 2D animation; there is something endearing about this film which may leave you smiling goofily in your seat even after the credits have started to roll. my ratings ---- 3.4/5 Stars!!!
