Anugerah '05: Jazz, HipHop & RnB (2b)

This week's episode saw the current group (was it Fu-yoh or Wah-Duh?? I've lost track, sorry... :p ) being whittled down from six contestants, to four.

The reign of the pretty boys continued with Taufik-Batisah knock-off, Syed Azmir, doing (what-else?) a nondescript Taufik-Batisahish number, whose song title I can't even recall at the moment. Despite points off for unoriginality (in my book, at least), Azmir was easily the most charismatic and confident performer of the lot, charming judges and his girly fans with his Usher-esque slickness. Unlike him, however, rocker-boy Irwan was like a fish out of water. Despite this drawback, he is clearly more popular (and thus escaped elimination) than the more low-profile Rino, who butchered my favorite karaoke song of all time, Bukan Untukku. OKLAH -- I admit he wasn't that terrible but I still think he picked the wrong song... =P

The mat-looking Chiko (now why did his mommy name him after a tropical fruit??) didn't perform too shabbily I suppose, but he lacked a certain presence that could have made him more distinguishable as an individual. Still, I thought he was much better than any of the two remaining female contestants who managed to get through to the semi-finals next week.

My mother commented how two such ghastly singers (she didn't say this exactly -- I exaggerate a tiny bit.. LOL) could get this far in the competition. Well, after the judges had rejected all the siti nurhaliza & ziana zain sound-alikes, I guess that leaves us with.. erm.. nothing much?? But perhaps Azrin's rendition of Misha Omar's Terpana was decent enough. Seriously, the same can't be said of Suhana's performance; her Pintaku Yang Terakhir was the most lackluster rendition I've ever heard in any malay talent show! Moreover, I really felt like taking a pencil and poking those distracting glitter spots on her face.. or better yet, take a lighter and burn that faux-fur collared jacket she was wearing! Sorry.. I think I'm just frustrated at the lack of good female singers in this year's competition. Obviously, the judges had been more than a little biased...

So that's it then. Azmir, Suhana, Azrin and Irwan (along with the semi-finalists from the first group) will all be down at IMM level 3, this coming 18th Sep, at 2pm, as part of the Anugerah roadshow. See you there~! ( -- NOT!)
