Of late, the newspapers are certainly chokeful of bizarre articles. Either that or our local Straits Times is turning into a regular tabloid! LOL
Even so, I thought nothing would be able to catch the attention of my jaded eye until I saw the headline in yesterday's Home section.. "Woman beaten to Death: Tears and anger at funeral."
The first thing that came to my mind after reading the article was that this is a story just waiting to be filmed as an episode for an upcoming season of True Files/ Crime Watch etc etc.
What set this piece of news apart from the rest (for me, at least) was that, despite the perfunctory way it was written (as Straits Times articles are wont to be), it was engaging and heartfelt (with help from my vivid imagination and some reading between the lines). I wonder what it must have been like for the twelve-year old boy who heard the cries of pain of his aunt but totally helpless to offer assistance. However, what could he have done anyway? He's just a kid... He could have been beaten up too.
And for 44 year-old Mohammad Zam Abdul Rashid, what was going through his mind as he bludgeoned his poor wife to near-death in their humble flat in Dover last Friday morning? In court, he confessed that he had not intended to hurt her. But honestly, when you raise your hand against someone, isn't it already with the intention to cause a certain measure of hurt or pain to begin with???
Putting myself in his shoes, I would regret it (i.e. causing grievous hurt to someone) very much too if I had been charged with murder in court. If convicted, I would have the face the death penalty and I guess if that happens, I won't be able to look forward to parole, won't I?? =p
