oscars: 2 wins out of 8 nominations:
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson (won)
Best Achievement in Sound Mixing (won)
Best Achievement in Art Direction
Best Achievement in Costume Design
3 nominations for Best Original Song: Patience, Listen, Love You I Do
Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy

my one-sentence synopsis:
Fat girl with super pipes is passed over in favour of skinny, gorgeous girl with not-so super pipes to become lead singer of rising soul/RnB girl group but the former emerges victorious in the end afterall.

You should watch this film because:
i) since Jennifer Hudson won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her performance, she must be worth watching... right?
ii) you like it when actors break into emotional songs in between dialogue and it's the (only) movie musical worth watching this year anyway.
iii) you are a diva-wannabe and seeing girls singing onstage in flashy, revealing, retro gowns make you wanna do the same too.
iv) Eddie Murphy is not frolicking around in a fat suit and irritating the hell out of you.
v) For once in her blessed life, Beyonce is not just an emotionless, singing robot.
vi) Seriously, the acting is good all around, cinematography is great and the music/songs are accessible even by modern day standards. Think Moulin Rouge or Chicago, but more contemporary.

You should NOT watch this film because:
You hate it when actors break into emotional songs in between dialogue and hence, you hate movie musicals. Period.

oscar-winning moment:
Seeing (and listening to) Jennifer Hudson in character telling (or is it yelling??) us that she is not going and that you're gonna love her. LOOOOOOOOVE her. =p

my ratings: 4/5 stars!!!
