FF2: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Tuesday, June 19, 2007

I really liked the first Fantastic Four movie; it wasn't anywhere close to the standards set by other successful comic-book-turned films such as Spiderman, the X-Men or even Superman, but it was entertaining and mildly engaging as all good summer flicks are supposed to be. The same may be said of FF2: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

I'm not an avid FF fan but I'm aware of the Silver Surfer/ Galactus storyline in the Marvel universe and believe me, it would have been near impossible to re-create the latter believably on the silver screen. I mean, HOW do you make a guy the size of the Empire State Building and wearing a goofy purple helmet look realistic??? Well anyway, representing him as a gigantic storm cloud was fine by me only that the ending of the film was a little too anti-climatic. In my honest opinion, the whole film itself, running at 92 minutes, was much too brief.

Because of this, probably, there wasn't much of a story, and much less of a script -- but what the film lacked in, director Tim Story tried to make amends with his action sequences and plenty of CGI which topped those we saw in the first film. Personally, I thought all the male actors in the FF, ie. Ioan Gruffurd (as Mr Fantastic), Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm) and even Chris Evans (Johnny Storm) were perfectly cast. Jessica Alba however, do NOT make a credible Sue Storm. And seriously, she should never ever blonde her hair again. Never ever! (Although I must admit, she still looked pretty hot in her tight little blue spandex outfit with hair tied back in irresistibly cute ponytail =p )

The one moment which I thought was truly funny was when the FF's creator (and comic-book legend) Stan Lee made a cameo as himself during the wedding scene in the film's first-half. Seriously though, Rise of the Silver Surfer may not be a heavyweight sequel with noble intentions but it sure is fun while it lasted.

My ratings --- 3.2/5 Stars!!!
